Samos with Chios and Mitilini are three of the larger islands of North Aegean Sea. Samos area is 480 km2 and is situated 1.100 meters from the coast of Asian Minor. Samos, Ikaria and the island group of Fourni constitute the prefecture of Samos with 43574 inhabitants (census of 2001). It is the island with "the fat of the land" as the ancient god Dionisos had said, in terms of natural wealth. A fertile place, Samos is the most green island in Greece. Full of olive trees, vineyards and pine-woods that begin from the sea until its higher points.
